+28,5% growth in the consumption of biofuels for transport in the EU between 2007 and 2008
With almost 10 million tons of oil equivalent (Mtoe), biofuel consumption in 2008 represented a 3.3% share of the total consumption of fuels devoted to transport in the European Union. The rate of progression of the sector marked time however with growth of 28.5% between 2007 and 2008 compared to 45.7% between 2006 and 2007. Certain EU countries will have to redouble efforts in the next two years to come into line with the European biofuels directive which aims for an incorporation rate of 5.75% by 2010.
